چکیده

In the quest for a microscopic theory for the superconductivity in cuprates, one hotly debated issue is the temperature at which Cooper pairs first form. Do pairs form at the critical temperature Tc or do they form at higher temperatures lacking phase rigidity? To answer the question, we have developed new techniques, based on scanning tunneling microscopy, to visualize the process of the pair formation on the atomic scale. The magnitude of the low-temperature superconducting gap measured in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ shows a large nanoscale spatial variation. These superconducting gaps evolve smoothly with temperature and close locally over a range of temperatures above the superconducting transition temperature Tc. Our results provide evidence that pairing first occurs in nanoscale regions above the bulk superconducting transition temperature. Using the ability to track the same atomic position while changing the temperature, we have examined the evolution of the electronic states from well below Tc to above the temperature at which the pairs first form. Our technique allows us to investigate another fundamental question on the pairing mechanism: Is pairing mediated by a bosonic excitation, as in conventional BCS superconductors, or is pairing an unavoidable consequence of the strong Coulomb repulsion in these compounds? We quantitatively analyze the temperature evolution of the gap and the local electron-boson coupling for various atomic sites with different pairing strengths. We observe that the gap magnitude variation is not determined by the electron-boson coupling but instead it is strongly correlated to variations present in the normal (ungapped) electronic states.

Nanoscale strain-induced pair suppression as a vortex-pinning mechanism in high-temperature superconductors.

Boosting large-scale superconductor applications require nanostructured conductors with artificial pinning centres immobilizing quantized vortices at high temperature and magnetic fields. Here we demonstrate a highly effective mechanism of artificial pinning centres in solution-derived high-temperature superconductor nanocomposites through generation of nanostrained regions where Cooper pair fo...

Correlation between characteristic energies in non–s-wave pairing superconductors

By solution of the Bethe-Goldstone equation for the Cooper pairing problem, an approximate analytic relation is derived between coherence length ξ and the binding energy of the Cooper pair. This relation is then qualitatively confirmed by numerically solving the corresponding self-consistent gap equations, following the crossover from weak to strong coupling, in non–s-wave superconductors. The ...

Magnetic excitations as driving force of superconductivity in CeCu2Si2

Coexistence or competition of superconductivity and magnetic order remains an important issue in condensed matter physics. While conventional superconductivity is generally incompatible with magnetism, the magnetic 4f or 5f moments in heavy-fermion superconductors play a crucial role for the appearance of unconventional superconductivity. Similar to the high-temperature cuprate superconductors,...

BEC, BCS and BCS-Bose Crossover Theories in Superconductors and Superfluids

For the Cooper/BCS model interaction in superconductors (SCs) it is shown: a) how BCS-Bose crossover picture transition temperatures Tc, defined self-consistently by both the gap and fermion-number equations, require unphysically large couplings to differ significantly from the Tc of ordinary BCS theory defined without the number equation since here the chemical potential is assumed equal to th...
